How to Repair Paint Chips and Scratches: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide

A stone chip, scrape or small paint failure can look minor, but leaving exposed metal or a broken coating system can allow corrosion and moisture to spread underneath the finish. The best repair starts with one decision: are you dealing with a surface mark, a colour-layer chip, or damage all the way through to the substrate?

1. Work out how deep the damage is

Wash the area and inspect it in good light. If the mark disappears when wet and the colour layer is intact, it may be mainly in the clear coat. If you can see a different-coloured primer, bare metal or plastic, the repair needs more than polishing.

2. Get the colour reference right before you start

For automotive repairs, the name of the colour is not enough. Manufacturers can use several similar shades, variants and finishes in the same model year. 3. Clean and degrease the repair area

Remove road film, wax, silicone, polish and grease before sanding or coating. Contamination trapped under a repair can cause poor adhesion, fisheyes and visible edges. Use a cleaner appropriate for the substrate and coating system, then allow the area to dry fully.

4. Remove loose paint and corrosion

Do not paint over flaking edges or active rust. Carefully remove anything that is no longer firmly attached and feather the surrounding edge so the repair transitions smoothly into sound paint. Keep the repair area as small as practical.

5. Prime bare substrate where required

Bare steel, aluminium and many plastics need different preparation and primers. Use a primer intended for the substrate and follow its technical data sheet. Build thin, controlled coats rather than trying to cover the repair in one heavy application.

6. Apply the colour in light coats

Shake and prepare the product exactly as instructed. Whether using a touch-up applicator or aerosol, several light applications generally give better control than one heavy coat. Allow the specified flash time between coats. Metallic and pearl colours are especially sensitive to application technique, film build and orientation, so a small spray-out test is valuable before committing to the vehicle.

7. Use clear coat when the paint system requires it

Some basecoat systems rely on a clear lacquer for gloss and protection. Others are direct-gloss systems. Do not assume every colour needs the same finishing process; match the clear coat to the paint system and follow the product technical data.

8. Let the repair cure before polishing or protecting it

Fresh paint can feel dry before it is fully cured. Avoid aggressive polishing, strong cleaners or sealing products until the coating manufacturer says the finish is ready. Rushing the final stage can soften, mark or dull an otherwise successful repair.

When should you stop and ask for help?

If the colour is uncertain, the panel has been repainted before, the damage is large, or the finish is a complex pearl or multi-stage system, confirming the repair route first is cheaper than buying the wrong materials twice.
